System Engineer
Location: Citywest Business Park
Role Purpose and Context
eir is lreland’s largest Telecommunications Provider, and is progressing a new initiative to migrate computing workloads to a flexible open source platform based on Docker and Kubernetes.
As a result, a role is available for a DevOps Engineer with Linux experience to assist in the design, development, and maintenance of this platform.
The DevOps Engineer will work collaboratively with internal teams through development, deployment, and operation of new microservice-based services, as well as the migration of other services compatible with the platform. You will also be part of the team responsible for continuing design, development, and maintenance of the environment itself.
The ideal candidate should have a broad range of hands-on technical skills with strong design and implementation skills, and at least one successfully completed design/build project.
Key Responsibilities
- Day-to-day management of the infrastructure stack
- Hardware specification and maintenance
- Ensuring that existing software and services are updated and patched as required
- Help improve our metrics and logs gathering capabilities
- Document and refine internal policies and procedures
- Automate as many policies and procedures as possible
- Working with development and network teams to troubleshoot issues.
- Some on-call duties as required
Knowledge and Experience
- Strong background in Linux/Unix Administration
- Strong communication skills: verbal and/or written
- Experience building and operating online services andfault-tolerant distributed systems
- Familiarity with a wide range of open source technologies
- Solid analytical, conceptual and problem-solving abilities
- A working understanding of compiled or scripting languages
- Knowledge of best practices and IT operations in an public-facing always-available environment
- Familiarity with Docker
- Familiarity with virtual machines and virtualization platforms
- Familiarity with Networked and Software defined storage technologies - NFS, RAID, Ceph\Gluster.
Desired Skills
- Strong experience with SQL and DBA on open-source databases
- Strong experience with Red Hat Enterprise Linux or CentOS
- Experience with Kubernetes
- Some experience with tool chains such as Jenkins, Ansible, Chef, Puppet, etc.
- Some familiarity with Agile and Continuous Delivery methodologies
